En quoi, une fois la République proclamée (21 septembre 1792) et le roi exécuté (21 janvier 1793), menaçait-elle, du fond de sa prison du Temple puis de la Conciergerie, l'ordre nouveau ? Son procès fut-il exigé par une intense mobilisation populaire ? Cherchait-on à la faire évader ? Rien de tout cela.
En examinant attentivement les minutes du procès éclair qui lui a été intenté par le Tribunal révolutionnaire les 14, 15 et 16 octobre 1793, en scrutant, ce qui n'avait jamais été fait avant lui, la biographie des jurés, en restituant le climat politique et la lutte de factions marquant la " mise à l'ordre du jour " de la Terreur (5 septembre), Emmanuel de Waresquiel raconte, avec émotion mais sans parti pris, trois journées pathétiques.
Il révèle les questions humiliantes posées à l'accusée, il rapporte les réponses dignes apportées à d'infâmes calomnies, il montre l'absence de véritables droits de la défense d'une femme condamnée d'avance. Il est clair que Marie-Antoinette n'a été que la victime expiatoire de conflits politiques qui régnaient entre la Convention, la Commune de Paris et les Jacobins. Dans ce nouveau livre à l'érudition impeccable, l'auteur multiplie les révélations et donne avec subtilité son sens véritable au moindre des propos tenus.
Décrivant le cadre, dépeignant les protagonistes, il restitue avec son talent habituel une atmosphère étouffante. Ne s'interdisant pas de dévoiler au lecteur les réflexions qu'éveillent chez l'historien des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles ce moment paroxystique du basculement révolutionnaire, Emmanuel de Waresquiel donne là le livre le plus dense, le plus littéraire et le plus personnel de sa carrière.
